66th Annual Grammy Awards

The Recording Academy’s mission to recognize excellence in the recording arts and sciences culminates in the Grammy Awards ceremony each year, attended by an audience of the world’s most successful and award-winning performers, record-producers, and audio engineers. The gala’s broadcast recorded the highest viewership of any music awards show for the past eighteen years. For the first time in its illustrious history, the Academy entrusted Cohesion to provide sound reinforcement for its most significant ceremony.

Challenge

The 2024 Grammy Awards required an audio system that could provide exceptional pattern control, fidelity, and tonality. Additionally, the venue, Crypto.com Arena in downtown Los Angeles, has many glass windows and partitions that could create a reflection on a television broadcast unless the PA featured a high degree of precision in directivity. Furthermore, the system needed to accommodate sightlines for the broadcast to millions of viewers without sacrificing power or clarity for the in-person attendees. Reliability and predictability from the PA were of utmost significance for “Music’s Biggest Night.”

Solution

The CO Series allowed the FOH full control over horizontal dispersion and offered precise vertical coverage. The arrayed CO12, CO10, and CO8 placed sound exactly where it was desired—and nowhere else. The self-powered CP218 II+ delivered depth and impact and emphasized low-frequency response without the loss and diminished texture associated with long cable runs. The higher power density of Cohesion translated to fewer enclosures needed for a full-scale broadcast production, saving weight and reducing rigging complexity for this elaborate multi-act production.

Result

The Cohesion system produced dependable power and versatility for the 66th Grammy Awards, as well as a consistent off-axis response for smooth, seamless coverage everywhere in the building. Since Cohesion products are engineered to deliver greater output and intelligibility in form factors comparable to (or smaller than) market alternatives, they were the perfect low-obstruction solution for millions of broadcast viewers and live attendees alike. The directivity of Cohesion kept unwanted energy from the back of the arrays off the stage, improving artists’ experiences, and its crystal-clear intelligibility was on display during an evening filled with star-studded speeches and performances from world-famous acts, like Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish, Travis Scott, and Billy Joel.

"Working with ATK and Clair Global on selecting a new speaker system and design for the 66th Grammys entailed selecting a speaker that could provide the wide frequency response and dispersion control required. After vetting several manufacturers' systems, we collectively agreed on Cohesion. The end result was, as expected, stellar, with a multitude of unsolicited comments on the clarity and coverage of the speaker system by producers and engineers working and attending the show."
