Slipknot returned to the stage on “Here Comes the Pain”, a tour celebrating a quarter-century of terrorizing and electrifying the public with their brash, ferocious music. The masked stalwarts of metal paid tribute to their fans and their history with a tour featuring songs recorded in 1999 or earlier, and a Cohesion PA was selected to provide the booming impact and reliable coverage throughout every venue coast-to-coast.
“Here Comes the Pain” featured stops at a variety of venues, including arenas, amphitheaters, and open-air facilities, so unified coverage from the selected PA was a must. The audio system needed to reproduce the mid-range and vocal range with crystal-clear precision while also producing the necessary low end. The production team also sought a PA that would be simple and fast to rig and strike and would take up minimal space for a truck pack.
Eighth Day Sound, a Clair Global brand, deployed a system featuring main and side hangs of Cohesion CO12 with flown and ground-stacked Cohesion CP218 II+ in cardioid configuration, providing ample low end in a genre that demands it. CF Series fill speakers, including the Cohesion CF28 and CF14, covered the hardcore fans, warmly known as “Maggots,” in the boisterous sections up front. The CF28 mirrored the architecture of the CO12 and providing a similar sonic signature to the flown PA while maintaining a remarkably consistent coverage across the horizontal plane.
Cohesion faithfully carried the sound of “Here Comes the Pain” to sold-out crowds on a five-month tour. The CF Series fill speakers provided seamless coverage and a rich sonic quality to fans packed against the barricade, screaming along to hit after hit from Slipknot’s certified double-platinum self-titled album. That infectious energy could be felt across any venue on tour, as the audio system handily covered every corner. The full PA, described as “super-fast,” “slick,” and “efficient” by Production Manager Robert Highcroft, was quick to rig and easy to strike (within 45 minutes) while fitting in a single truck.
“This system is killer. It makes things easier for me where the guitars and vocals live. I’m a mid-range guy. Heavy metal tends not to have mid-range in the guitars, and it gets to be a conundrum of pushing the guitars too loud to hear them, but you still don’t hear them. With this system, I don’t have that problem. The guitars are right up in your face. This PA is a keeper.”
